Penguin Facts

1. Penguins are the only truly "flightless" birds in the world. Although chickens and ostriches don't appear to be able to fly, they are able to fly short distances, up to 100 meters.

2. Male penguins are just as responsible for their young as female penguins. Male penguins, called ots, hold the egg on their feet while the females search for food before the chick hatches.

3. Did you know that the DNA from a velociraptor is 98% the same as a penguin's DNA? Penguins are the closest living relative to a velociraptor. Strange, but true!

4. Penguins are the world's toughest birds. They can survive temperatures up to -50 degrees F and live without sunlight for up to 3 months at a time.

5. Most people think that penguins only live in the southern hemisphere, but a recently discovered pod (or group) of penguins was located on the northern shores of Greenland.
